I have been interning at the Arlington Chamber of Commerce for almost a month now, and every second of my time here has been eye-opening and phenomenal. I am in the Professional Related Intern/Mentorship Experience (PRIME) Program, which lasts four weeks, through Arlington Public Schools. PRIME is an internship program for rising juniors and seniors in high school that matches students with an organization or business related to their field of interest.

At the end of the day, growth is every company’s most important objective and most important challenge. According to our recent research, 90 percent of surveyed executives (senior executives in strategy, product, innovation, marketing, and related fields) indicate that growth and innovation will become even more of a challenge amidst macroeconomic uncertainty, structural change and competitive complexity. A recent MIT Sloan article stated, “CEOs are faced with the dual challenge of protecting their backyards from upstarts and incumbents, while simultaneously devising strategies that will guide their growth for the next five years.” Solving this growth challenge is the key value creation opportunity for companies, as capital markets consistently reward the companies that can confidently articulate strong future growth stories. Specifically, as much as 70 percent of the enterprise value of a company is based on market expectations of its future growth prospects over the medium to long-term time horizons. So, where will future growth come from? How will it be sustained? Should business growth be left to chance and the mercy of volatile markets and changing customer behavior? These are the questions that modern growth champions grapple with everyday. By Jay E. Reiner, CPA As the moderator of the Chamber’s Breakfast Connection, every month I get to tell the attendees that we’re going to spend about 45 minutes doing “speed networking,” where everybody will give their 60 second elevator pitch to the other people sitting at their table. For the introverted or unprepared people sitting in the room, this can be an intimidating or scary prospect. I’m here to help alleviate the fear and anxiety. I am closing in on my sixth week at the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, working full-time since my Senior Experience commenced on May 22. So far, I’ve enjoyed my time here at the Chamber and being able to have had the privilege of waking up every morning Monday-Thursday to work from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. It has been great to experience what life is like as a part of the workforce. The adjustment of going from being a part-time intern to a full-time intern has been rather smooth than complicated. I’ve still manage to be just as punctual and as focused as I can possibly be throughout my day at the Chamber of Commerce, as well as ask for help when I need it. By Lauren Cates, LMT, Executive Director, Healwell There aren’t many people who don’t love massage. Massage has been synonymous with luxury and pampering for eons. It has come to be known as the ultimate self-indulgence. But this has also been its downfall. When something feels luxurious, it’s easy for us to mistake it for a luxury. A calm, well-treated body with as little pain and anxiety as possible is not a luxury. It’s essential to healing, even if that healing happens on the way to dying. Massage therapy and basic human touch are largely undervalued in healthcare today. The skill, compassion, and commitment required to bring massage therapy into the hospital in a fully integrated and meaningful way is unique and is not afforded by the level of training offered to most massage therapists in massage school. Each month at the Chamber, we host a Chamber 101 session called SMART Start. We start the session with an interactive question: “Why do you think people join the Chamber?” Nine times out of 10, the first response is either networking or business growth. The Chamber is proud to hold over 100 events and programs per year, and one of our core monthly networking events is our Breakfast Connection |
The mission of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce is to strengthen businesses and the economic environment for those who work, live and do business in Arlington.
