The tax code grew by about 500 pages with the introduction of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017, which was rushed to completion at the end of December. While tax compliance and preparation for some individuals with only W2 wages and few deductions may be streamlined, the rules affecting businesses and business owners have grown significantly more complex with the TCJA.

A hit singer/songwriter once asked us, "What is love?" It seems like an easy question on the surface, but if you ask 3 different people to define love, you'd get 3 different definitions. Some may spout that, "love is patient, love is kind" while others may say it is simply caring for someone or something more than you care for yourself. Even Spongebob weighed in on the subject saying, "Love is giving someone a loaded gun and expecting them not to shoot." All of these sound great, but what is love to an entrepreneur with a business to run? By Kat Williams, Director of Development, Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) Placing an animal in a loving home is like catnip to animal shelter staff and volunteers; it’s what gets people up each morning to scrub the kennels and out in the rain to walk dogs. And hearing people’s stories of adopting their cherished family cat, first dog, or beloved rabbit is further reward. But adoptions are only one of the many services that animal shelters, like the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA), provide to the community. Shelters not only find wonderful homes for homeless animals, but also provide programs and services to ensure that companion animals stay healthy and safe with their owners, and everyone, regardless of income, may enjoy the love of a pet. When it comes to Arlington County businesses, Ingrid H. Morroy, Arlington County’s Commissioner of Revenue and her staff in the Business Tax Division enjoy assisting new and existing businesses, especially at this time of year when every business must file their annual business license tax return, also known as the Business, Professional, and Occupational License (BPOL), by March 1. "Kids are hard work and it's difficult to like them a lot of the time. But just when you're about to get fed up, they do something that makes you love them all over again.” –Anonymous Your business is like your kid. Whether you were there for its birth or stepped up when someone else stepped down, you love it with everything you have. You make sure to give it the time and attention it needs to grow and you protect it from harm. It's also like your kid in that sometimes it just doesn't act right. Whether employees are leaving early or missing targets, sometimes your business isn't turning out how you'd thought it would be. When this happens, it's easy and understandable to be more than a little upset. No one is going to love your business like you do, but that's okay!

Taking care of an elderly person can be an overwhelming task. It has to be done with passion and full dedication. I was very fortunate to talk with Michael San Juan who has committed his life to serving the seniors. He is the Executive Director of Always Best Care of Arlington that provides multiple options for seniors including an assisted living finder/referral services, in-home care and remote safety monitoring/remote home automation. Michael is a licensed healthcare professional and his passion to elderly healthcare has helped him in his role as the Executive Director. He’s been in the industry of helping the elders for 28 years and has mastered the field of providing healthcare. By Eva Meckley, Fitness Together Alexandria It’s the end of January, the first month of 2018 and a time focused on getting back on track after the over-indulgence during the holidays. Many of us made New Year’s resolutions in the hopes of bettering our lives for the next year to come or to break old negative habits. While these intentions were great, the fact is that New Year’s resolutions are set up to fail and many already have. According to research from Scranton University, only eight percent* of us accomplish the resolutions that we set. So instead of throwing out resolutions entirely, keep reading this post! The 94th Annual Arlington Business Gala is just around the corner, and the Chamber will be raffling off a tropical getaway to St. Lucia! Upon landing at the airport in Castries, St. Lucia you will be greeted by the friendliest islanders sampling delicious local rum flavors from St. Lucia Distillers (the distillery tour is not to be missed!). You can’t help but relax as you smell the salt in the air and see the swaying palm trees in the island breeze. You’re in and out of the airport in minutes, enjoying your taxi ride and taking in the sights and sounds of island life, before arriving at the beautiful St. James’s Morgan Bay Club resort. |
The mission of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce is to strengthen businesses and the economic environment for those who work, live and do business in Arlington.
